Help Change Our Animal Cruelty Law In California

Thank you for visiting Adam's Amendment.com, named after a tiny kitten that was badly burned alive in Santa Rosa last month.

Active cruelty to an animal implies malicious intent, when a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm through torture or mutilation to an animal.  Acts of intentional cruelty are often some of the most disturbing and should be considered as serious psychological problems. This type of behavior is often associated with sociopathic behavior and should be taken very seriously. Consider a little historical data on notorious serial killers linked to animal abuse in the United States: As a child, serial killer and rapist Ted Bundy—ultimately convicted of two killings but suspected of murdering more than 40 women—witnessed his father’s violence toward animals, and he himself subsequently tortured animals. Earl Kenneth Shriner, who raped and stabbed a 7-year-old boy, was known in his neighborhood for hanging cats and torturing dogs. Brenda Spencer, who opened fire at a California school, killing two children and injuring nine others, had repeatedly abused cats and dogs, often setting their tails on fire. Serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer impaled the heads of dogs and cats on sticks.

Violent acts toward animals have long been recognized as indicators of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animals. “Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving also at the idea of worthless human lives,” wrote humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. “Murderers … very often start out by killing and torturing animals as kids,” according to Robert K. Ressler,  of the FBI.  Studies have now convinced sociologists, lawmakers, and the courts that acts of cruelty toward animals deserve our attention. They can be the first sign of a violent pathology that includes human victims; many of these abusers will move on to their fellow humans.

There are currently over 750 cases of animal cruelty in California. Please sign Adam's Amendment Petition, and urge local legislators to ensure these crimes are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, as a felony conviction. Currently, the penal code dictates this vile offense can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony, and the maximum sentence is only 3 years. Sign this petition, and encourage legislators to up the prision range, by doubling the maximum sentence to 6 years.  By showing your support, our local legislators will create a bill that will impose stricter penalties upon those that are cruel to animals, with prison time, and mandated counseling. Help ensure this bill is created and is signed into law!

Show your support for our furry, feathered and reptilian friends - for the love of animals, support their rights for  justice.
