When looking at current cruelty cases and comparing laws across the US, I found an alarming imbalance; thus inspiring the desire to amend the law, and ensure those guilty of these offenses will be punished and receive the counseling they clearly need.

As an animal lover and enthusiast, I was horrified when I read about the willful cruelty that had been maliciously inflicted on an innocent kitten. To learn more about Adam, and his recovery effort, visit www.pressdemocrat.com

Further upsetting, is the law with regard to animal cruelty. While California does have a felony provision for animal cruelty cases, in many instances it will be charged, or plea bargained down to a misdemeanor, a much less serious offense. The absolute maximum penalty for an animal cruelty conviction in California is a sentence of 3 years and fine of $20,000. Keep in mind however, that with good behavior and work time adjustments, an individual will likely serve less than 2 years incarcerated. Ensure this range is increased, and offenders will serve up to 6 years for comitting these autrocities. Compare California to just several other states:

State
Maximum Time
Maximum Fine
Alabama
10 years
$5,000.00
Colorado
6 years
$500,000.00
Iowa
5 years
$75,000.00
Oregon
5 years
$100,000.00
Louisiana
10 years
$25,000.00

A state as progressive as California must amend this law, to ensure the individuals responsible for these atrocities are properly punished. By signing Adam's Amendment petition, we are taking the first step to fix this imbalance and seek justice for our animals by amending this law. Please show local legislators citizens will not tolerate animal abuse cases, and encourage longer prison ranges.

The underlying message is simple; abusing animals is a serious crime, and  people who torture and mutilate  animals are deeply disturbed. The punishment for these offeses must fit the crime. A study conducted by  Northeastern University and the Massachusetts SPCA found that people who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against humans. The majority of inmates scheduled to be executed for murder at California’s San Quentin penitentiary “practiced” their crimes on animals.

There are over 745 active animal abuse cases in California. Below are a few samples of the atrocities that individuals commit.

Cats and dogs are not the only ones abused, all animals need our help. The links below provide horror stories of animals abused.
