Re: Support for Amending the Animal Cruelty Law
Dear Assembly member Berg:
I am a registered California voter writing to express my support for amending our animal cruelty law.
Willful cruelty implies intent and malice and our current state law is far too lenient for such a vicious and violent crime.
State law currently charges this crime as a misdemeanor or a felony, with a maximum sentence of 3 years regardless of how
aggravated the offense. Please ensure this law is amended, and the prison range for a felony offense will be raised to a 2,
4 or 6 year term. Animal cruelty is a serious crime, and should be punished justly.
It is proven
that individuals who commit violent crimes against animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against human
beings. When taking into consideration these serious socio-pathic indications, it seems like a highly logical choice to amend
this law. Torturing and mutilating animals is a trait shared by nearly every serial killer. That being said, it would be difficult
to understand why one wouldn't support this amendment. This legislation amendment will not only further protect animals,
but people as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. There is a great deal
of public support behind this amendment, Californians believe in protecting our animals from cruelty. Please take a stand
in support of protecting animals and humanity alike.
I strongly support amending our animal
cruelty law.
